Ameland has been at the forefront of the energy transition for quite some time. When funding for research became available through Brussels, the way was paved for further progress. Repowered is now collaborating with a European consortium on the IANOS project on Ameland. This five-year project focuses on developing integrated, sustainable energy solutions—a Smart Energy Hub—for islands.

The IANOS Project

The first year of the IANOS project consisted primarily of theoretical research. This was carried out in collaboration with partners such as Neroa and TNO. Within this project, Repowered is focused on developing algorithms to better align energy supply and demand on Ameland. The algorithms are also used to trade on the energy markets. Neroa installs the equipment controlled by these algorithms, while TNO has developed a platform where all the data is consolidated.

The IANOS project aims to develop comprehensive solutions for islands, making smart use of sustainably generated energy. We also refer to this as a Smart Energy Hub. Ameland is a small community, so the goal is to fully utilize the sustainable energy generated on the island itself. In doing so, we increase the share of sustainable energy on the island.

Although Repowered focuses specifically on Ameland, the project is also working on a Smart Energy Hub on Terceira (Azores, Portugal). The idea is to apply the results to other islands in Europe. This will allow other islands to follow Ameland’s example and implement similar solutions. It is essential to demonstrate that these solutions actually work. To that end, we are conducting tests and field trials on Ameland.

How does this project contribute to the energy transition?

After a year of planning and a year of preparation, the first tests were conducted, during which communication between Repowered and the TNO platform was successful.
The project is currently in the phase where all devices are being connected and the energy system as a whole is set to become operational. The system will be tested in practice for one year to determine whether it functions properly.

How does this project contribute to the energy transition?
The IANOS project contributes to the energy transition by providing insights into how to maximize the use of renewable energy on the island itself. Islands are ideally suited to serve as Smart Energy Hubs because they constitute a defined area. This makes them highly suitable for an independently functioning and sustainable energy system. The goal is to demonstrate that an area can be self-sufficient with renewable energy.
