February 12, 2026– Repowered and GIGA Storage today announced the signing of a route-to-market agreement for Project Rhino, GIGA Storage’s battery energy storage system (BESS) in Lelystad, Flevoland. GIGA Storage has successfully managed and optimized the 12 MW battery in-house to date but will transfer operational management to smart energy supplier Repowered effective April 1, 2026, for a period of two years.
The Rhino BESS Project
The Rhino battery, with a capacity of 12 MW / 7.5 MWh, was GIGA Storage’s first project and, upon its commissioning in 2020, the largest battery in the Netherlands. The system is capable of storing an annual amount of electricity equivalent to the consumption of approximately 5,000 households. The battery is located at the Wageningen University & Research test site in Lelystad, next to the Neushoorntocht wind farm and connected to the Smart Grid Flevoland closed distribution system. The BESS is designed to store renewable energy and feed it back into the power grid at strategic times. In doing so, the battery contributes to a more stable and reliable energy system and the optimal use of renewable energy.
Management and optimization by Repowered
Over the first five years, GIGA Storage successfully managed and optimized the Rhino BESS in-house, determining when and how much energy was stored and fed into the grid. As the company has grown, its strategic focus has shifted to establishing and managing an ecosystem with leading operators capable of optimizing the GIGA BESS portfolio in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. Starting April 1, 2026, Repowered will take over the management and optimization of the Rhino BESS for the next two years.
