Dual Energy: The Ideal Solution with a Solar Farm and Battery

Battery Design and Construction

The project comprised two essential phases in which Repowered and Novar worked together. The first step was installing the battery at the solar park. Repowered provided Smart Energy Consultancy services and assessed the project’s feasibility. Repowered was also responsible for developing the business case. Development then passed to Novar, with Repowered providing project support in an advisory capacity. Thanks to this close collaboration, the battery was quickly and successfully installed and made operational. The battery was connected on December 22, 2022.

Operation and Optimization

With a capacity of five megawatts (MW) and a storage capacity of five megawatt-hours (MWh), the battery offers significant opportunities for the smart use of green energy. The battery serves several functions: reducing grid congestion, for example. It does this by storing energy when the grid is “full” and delivering it at a more opportune time. It also achieves this by making smart use of the energy and imbalance markets in combination with the Smart Power Purchase Agreement (SPPA).
Following the successful implementation, Repowered assumed the role of independent operator. For phase two, we are deploying our Smart Energy Services: grid connection, battery optimization, and energy procurement via a flexible PPA.

Role as an operator

This is where Repowered’s experience and expertise really shine: We manage the battery’s operations and are responsible for the day-to-day optimization, deployment, and trading of the stored energy. Operations and optimization are carried out efficiently and, above all, transparently. To this end, Repowered uses its own platform and proprietary algorithms. This enables us to implement and continuously monitor the agreed-upon energy strategy. In this way, we make optimal use of the battery and contribute to Novar’s sustainability goals.

Former landfill

The partnership with Novar is unique because Repowered has been involved in the project from the very beginning. This allowed us to support Novar with the business case analysis and the development of the battery. This makes the transition to the operational phase easier.

Bontepolder is a former landfill site. By building a solar farm on this otherwise unusable land and combining it with a battery storage system, both the municipality of Terneuzen and the province of Zeeland are moving a step closer to their climate goals.
