Vrijopnaam is an independent energy supplier that provides 100% Dutch solar power and develops its own solar parks. Repowered now manages 11 solar parks and 1 battery for Vrijopnaam. This is done at the portfolio level: all installations are managed in coordination and collaboration with one another. To do this, Vrijopnaam uses Optima, Repowered’s new algorithm that combines real-time management with even smarter forecasts and market insights.

Maximum added value
Vrijopnaam focuses on the production, storage, and supply of solar power. “We realized that the (financial) synergy between these components could be leveraged even more effectively,” says Sander Kooper, project lead developer at Vrijopnaam. “Our main goal was to achieve maximum added value: from gaining insight into all energy flows to financially optimizing our assets by making smart decisions at the right moments.”
That ambition called for a partner that combinescustomization,speed, andpragmatism. Sander: “Repowered and Vrijopnaam are a good fit because we both take a pragmatic approach. No multi-layered organizations with long communication lines or lengthy implementation times. This market is evolving at lightning speed: what seemed logical last month may already be outdated. The beauty of our partnership is that we keep each other on our toes and focus on realistic optimizations.”
Vrijopnaam has been working with Repowered for over two years now, and the partnership has been going well. We started with a few solar parks and later added a battery. Now, the entire portfolio has been migrated to thenew Optima algorithm. This allows us to consistently make the smartest choices based on factors such as generation, consumption, market prices, and grid capacity.
Sander provides a concrete example of Optima’s value in connection with the energy storage system (EOS) in Reuver:
“You can easily let prices on the day-ahead or imbalance market determine charging and discharging behavior, but at the portfolio level, this often leads to suboptimal outcomes. We are now seeing that the EOS sometimes exhibits ‘different’ behavior, which actuallycreates maximum synergy for Vrijopnaam as a whole. It’s all about the interaction between generation, storage, and supply. Moreover, as a Congestion Service Provider (CSP), Repowered opens the door for us to grid-supporting services.”

The energy market is changing rapidly in technical, financial, and legal terms. Vrijopnaam sees this as an opportunity. “We believe that storage at the source—for example, at solar parks—combined with supply to end users is a flexible, robust, and future-proof model. With that in mind, we will continue to work with Repowered in the coming period to continuously optimize the algorithms that control our parks and batteries.”
Thanks to Optima, Vrijopnaam can fulfill its mission: to give every household in the Netherlands the opportunity to generate its own (solar) power, even if they don’t have their own roof or a suitable roof at home.
