from 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per year to hydrogen
Commissioned by the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân, we investigated how four industrial companies in Bolsward—which together account for an annual gas consumption of 10 million cubic meters—can become more sustainable by using locally produced green hydrogen.
Looking for sustainable alternatives
The four industrial companies—UCC Coffee, Rentex, Elis, and Hochwald—together form the Bolsward Project. They have been exploring sustainable alternatives to their natural gas-powered production. We conducted a feasibility study commissioned by the municipality of Súdwest-Fryslân. The study revealed that hydrogen is a highly suitable option due to the specific production processes used by these companies. There are other ambitious projects underway in Bolsward, such as the district heating network and STOGEF (geothermal energy), with which this project aligns well. We investigated the feasibility of a hydrogen production site in Bolsward, where hydrogen would be produced from renewable local energy sources, such as wind energy from Windpark Friesland (WPF), supplemented by regional solar energy.
System Concept and System Design
In this feasibility study, we focused on developing a system concept and assessing its technical and economic feasibility. This resulted in a system design with implementation requirements and a comprehensive technical and financial model. The project was carried out in collaboration with Ventolines, which focused primarily on the legal and organizational aspects. Thanks to this collaboration, we were able to develop a comprehensive plan to achieve the transition to hydrogen in a robust and controlled manner.
Next step: implementation
Throughout the study, we maintained close contact with all stakeholders to ensure a future-proof project with broad support.
Thanks to the promising results, the companies can now proceed with internal research into the implementation of hydrogen in their processes. The next step is to find partners who can actually develop the system.
The Bolsward project represents a significant milestone on the path toward a sustainable energy supply and reducing CO2 emissions from large-scale consumers. Repowered will remain involved as a consultant in the next steps of this project, and we hope to continue supporting its development.
